 COUNSELING SERVICES

Mental health counseling, psychotherapy, or “talk therapy” is a method of treatment for various mental disorders that is performed by a licensed mental health therapist. Your therapist will use research-based treatment modalities to help you achieve your goals. Our experienced therapists provide a wide range of therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, Person Centered Therapy, and more. The frequency and modality of therapy, that best fits your needs, will be determined by your therapist during your first assessment session.

The first session is also referred to as the diagnostic assessment session, where you and your therapist will begin with a discussion about your background and the reasons you are coming in for therapy. This will help your therapist better understand your needs and determine the appropriate therapeutic modality that will best fit your needs. We offer individual, couples, family, and group therapy.

PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING

Psychological tests are written, visual, or verbal evaluations administered to assess the cognitive and emotional functioning of children or adults. These evaluations are performed, by a licensed psychologist, to obtain accurate diagnoses, and to help individuals gain more insight in order to be more successful. The assessment is generally comprised of 4 phases.

Initial interview. During the interview, the psychologist will meet the client and stake holders that are a part of the client’s daily life (significant other, guardian/ parent, etc.). The psychologist will collect some background information and answer your questions about the testing process. During this phase, it is very helpful to inform the psychologist of any professionals (teacher, therapist, medical doctor, etc.) that may have insight into the client’s diagnosis or condition. At the conclusion of the initial interview, the client (or guardian) should have a clear understanding of which testing will be performed, and what to expect in each upcoming phase of the testing process.

Testing. In this phase, the appropriate psychological test(s) will be administered. The length and duration of each test will vary on various factors. Some tests can be completed in one session, while others may require more than one session. To inquire about the type of tests and evaluations that are performed at Toledo Counseling & Mental Health, please call (419) 318-8533.

Analysis and report writing. Once testing has been completed, the psychologist will begin scoring and analyzing the collected data. The analyzed data will be used to reach a more accurate diagnosis and shed more light on the presenting issue. The The psychologist will then prepare a comprehensive psychological report which is often lengthy and is comprised of multiple sections.

Feedback. During the feedback session, the client or guardian (if applicable) will be provided with the results and findings of the testing. The psychologist will explain the findings to the present stake holders, and provide their clinical recommendations for the best next step.
